COMM 130 Project 5 Logos
Description:
A project to build logo design skills. The logo shown is for a fictitious remote tech support company called iChat, which provides help desk services by phone, text, and IM. The logo is portrayed in color, grayscale, and white-on-color.
Process:
Since the company talks people through technological issues, I decided to symbolize the talk with a word balloon. I symbolized technology with the “i” prefix that appears everywhere in our culture in connection with tech.
I thought of several different ways to do this. I originally wanted to have a solid fill for the word balloon with white lettering, but outside critique indicated the outlined balloon was better. I also now think it makes the logo more flexible. I thought of adding movement by making the balloon asymmetrical, more like a wedge. But I wanted to convey a feeling of security to assure viewers the company could fix their problems, so I decided to throw that idea out and pursue something closer to symmetrical balance. I also used a serif font in the interest of getting that feeling of security versus a more stark, intense feeling that would probably come from a sans serif font. I also notice that the logo looks like a standard “information” symbol, which could work in its favor.
This logo was designed in Adobe Illustrator. One challenge that came up was that when I made the balloon outline by uniting a rounded rectangle with the tail, the rounded corners on the rectangle ceased to appear uniform. I fixed this manually with the direct selection tool.
Message:
You can talk with iChat and they will fix your tech problems.
Audience:
A somewhat older audience, probably older than the Millennial generation and less tech-savvy.
Top Thing Learned:
Simple logos are not only more versatile in terms of scaling and placement, but they also lend themselves to more diverse ad possibilities. Ideas have already poured into my head for campaigns using this logo. Check out this example Halloween ad:
